Match Report - 19 July 2009

Yass Redbacks women's football team took to the field on Sunday at Walker Park for the very first time in front of a strong local crowd. In spite of back-to-back losses the team was confident and eager to play, with Gungahlin United unfortunately only able to field 10 players for the match. Yass intercepted the ball from the kick off and quickly pushed the ball up the left wing, which allowed Nat Corcoran to slide a perfect shot past the Gungahlin goalkeeper to put Yass on the scoreboard in the first minute of the game. Instead of inspiring the team to greater things, it progressed into a very mediocre fisst half. The ball remained firmly in the Gunhahlin half but Yass was unable to fimd the back of the net again despite some good attempts from Carla Valencic and Nat Corcoran. While Yass were unable to get their passing game off the ground, the first half had produced some good plays by Bek Kordas and Sonya Thorpe. Tamsin Foy moved up into midfield to apply more pressure on the Gungahlin side but the half time score remained at 1, 1-0, witt Gungahlin unable to get past the backline combination of captain Kath Farnell, Anna Buckman and Jen Hudson.

The second halt showcased a bit more enthusiasm with some excellent corner kicks taken by Renee O'Loughlan. This ultimately allowed Emma Powell to be in the right place to score Yass's second goal, much to the delight of the vocal spectators on the hill. Gungahlin made a spirited attempt on the Yass goal which was only just stopped by keeper Ingrid Swanson. This was followed shortly after one of the standout players of the day, Bek Kordas, rolled her ankle badly and had to be carried from the field. A late entry to the game by Lynelle Green fired the squad up and Yass attacked again with Rose Murphy the lucky third goal scorer for the Yass team.

The final score was 3,0 against a valiant but undermanned Gungahlin side. The day was a success for the Yass Football Club and the plans are already being made for some more home games for the ladies next season.

With seven games left in the season, the Redbacks sit in fourth position ahead of Sunday's garne with Belnorth at the University of Canberra.
