Grand Final 12 Sept 2009 Yass FC 2 Weston Creek Nil
Congratulations to the Yass Redbacks open men's football team for a fantastic two - nil Grand Final victory over Weston Creek on Saturday 12 September. The Club House sponsored Yass FC Redbacks won their preliminary final against Belconnen United to be first into the big one, leaving Weston Creek and Belconnen to see who could get through to challenge Yass. Weston won the major semi 2-1 and were keen to get their first win over Yass in 2009 after going down at Walker Park to the Redbacks 3-2 and then snatching a one all draw with a late penalty when the two teams met at Waramanga. However, after a solid season of only two losses, two draws and sixteen wins to take the minor premiership, the Redbacks were hungry for more silverware. From the kick off Weston Creek threw everything at the Yass defence, three shots on goal went just wide. They were aggressive and quick in attack which forced the Yass team to make some late challenges and give away free kicks, luckily for Yass their opposition were unable to capitalise and the Yass boys managed to weather the storm and began to even up the possession.
The game went from end to end with the Weston keeper kicking the ball long with the wind at his back. Both teams created opportunities via free kicks but could not manage to score from these set pieces. Yass came close with a well placed free kick from half way taken by Ryan Wing and followed into the box by Grant Taylor who headed it toward goal but unfortunately into the keeper's hands. In the twenty seventh minute Yass put on a counter attack and after a one two between Ryan Betts and Daniel Taylor, Ryan crossed the ball to the far side of the box, the floating ball cleared the last defender and goal keeper to land sweetly for Mitch Darmody to control and put Yass one goal up.
Whilst Cameron Betts huge goal kicks against the wind were helping the Redbacks cause, Weston continued to apply pressure on the Yass back line and came up with a free kick in the thirty third minute. The shot came off the post and the Yass clearing kick rebounded of a Weston Creek player and into the net, however the linesman already had his flag up for offside and the goal was disallowed much to the relief of Yass keeper Andrew Holgate. The Redbacks lifted their intensity for the remainder of the half and went off at the break one nil up. After a solid performance at left back in the first half James Alley was replaced by a fresh Ronnie Cover. Andy Jewell and Anthony O'Mara came on as fresh attacking legs for John Cover and Daniel Taylor. AJ was quickly into the action with a good run down the right wing and a cross to the centre of the box creating a chance for Yass.
Weston Creek had fewer opportunities during the second half with the Yass midfield of Ryan Wing, Gary Urquhart and Mitch and Brett Darmody winning more ball. Yass also had a goal disallowed in the seventy fifth minute after Ryan Betts was pinged for hand ball by the linesman. Yass persisted with putting the ball through to Ryan and in the eighty fourth minute he beat the Weston Creek keeper to put Yass two nil up and only six left on the clock.
Weston were frustrated and their number thirteen Doyle received his second yellow for the day and was therefore given his marching orders much to the pleasure of many the Yass supporters. Weston had a couple of last ditch attempts in the dying minutes but could not breach the Redbacks defence.
