Match Report
Tough Start to Season
The Retravision sponsored Yass U18 are competing in the toughest diversion to date, we have played 4 games and have not had any success as yet. The first two we non competitive and was a very good insight in to the world of Div 1.
Our first opponents gave us an insight into a different style of football that we are still coming to terms with, we did however have some very confident attacks that lead to a great goal from Ross Jenkinson. We also learnt some valuable lessons from that game and carried it to our next encounter, we travelled to Woden and found ourselves on a smaller than normal field than we are use to but to the boys credit and determination we found ourselves in a 2-1 lead only to finish 3-2 down which was due to some basic rules we were trying to follow but let slip, it was a better performance and the team played for the better part of 70 minutes like a semi organized team.
So we started the competition with our first official game on the Synthetic Pitch at Hawker which was an experience that all the boys won’t forget, we came out with a plan to keep control of our shape and passes and talk for the whole game which lead to some very exciting plays and were un lucky at times not to push their defence better but too the boys credit they never gave up but their best only going down to a very capable side in Cooma.
So this week we worked on the team spirit, trust in each other, keeping a shape and communicating well about what we want to achieve, which was some of the things we have learnt from the 3 previous games, the coach was unable to attend to his usual role this week and instead was in charge of the game so was watching from the middle, the redbacks started of very well and were holding on to the ball pressing up when needed and had the other team guessing on how to play us, but for a couple of silly mistakes from the redbacks we let the other team in. This did not seem to worry the boys and the dug a little deeper and started to show TEAM work and with some very good plays and some great defending even though a couple of the attacks were offside they did manage to kept the score at a respectable level at half time 3 - 0 nil.
The second half started with the same sort of intensity from the redbacks and they showed that they can mix it up with the best that Div 1 has to offer and with a penalty awarded from deep within the redbacks half a lovely ball caught the other teams defenders off guard and with the flying forward Ross Jenkinson he worked the ball behind the keeper and started a revival from the boys. The play was end to end for about 15 min with no side getting on top till again a lack of communication from us that lead to an own goal, still no one put their head down and gave up trying and it showed with a strong attack that lead to a corner in our favour, Sam Brack set up and with the trusty left foot managed to bend it in to the back top corner of the net.
The final score did not reflect the game, this week we showed to ourselves that we have it in us to score as well as match some of these sides we are taking on.
We have come up against the strongest side so far, and you can keep your heads held high with the way we have played and the way in which we have learnt from every game and then used that in each week to better ourselves, TRUST each other, believe in TEAM work, and communicate and you will find that dreams do come true. WELL done boys we still have 12 more games to go so anything is possible.
